Morning After

In one of the most anticipated openings of the year, Morning After promised a ‘different’ kind of breakfast, excellent coffee (Uncle Joe’s, 5 Senses) and a super swish fitout.

We actually visited back in October shortly after opening, of course I am blogging ridiculously after the fact as usual.

We rocked up at a time that I thought was inappropriately early on a Saturday morning, only to find the place packed out and a wait for tables. We were offered a table in the sun that we wouldn’t have to wait for as everyone else was declining to sit there….. big error as we were subsequently burnt and blinded by the scorching Spring Queensland sun.

We ordered coffees on Uncle Joe’s Purple Haze blend, which were delivered…. slowly. I couldn’t fathom ordering a hot coffee and so had my latte iced. I love these glasses, and would like to know where they come from, I’ve seen them at a few cafes.

The breakfast menu promises usual and unusual dishes, the Breakfast Carbonara being the most intriguing. As Morning After is owned by the same family that has Dell’Ugo at New Farm (and previously at South Bank before they were closed), you would expect an Italian twist. The breakfast carbonara is certainly a lightened version for breakfast, a serving of pappardelle with field mushrooms and a 63 degree egg to mix around, with a smattering of pecorino. L declared it to be “delicious”…. I am getting him a thesaurus for Christmas to try to be a bit more forthcoming with the adjectives.

I had Buttermilk and Ricotta Pancakes, with lime mascarpone, stone fruit, apple and maple syrup. The pancakes themselves weren’t that pretty, very thin but with two decently sized cakes, there was plenty on the plate for me. The best bits were the lime mascarpone and the apple, both very zingy when compared with the saccharine tones of the maple syrup. The odd scattering of the mint and edible flowers seemed a bit lazy and rushed.

Now the opening crowds would have died down, I would like to try Morning After again, particularly this time indoors in the shade, and with a bit more time to enjoy a couple of coffees. The fitout is certainly worth a visit in itself, I just love the flooring and timber tones.
